From Pat Wyss:

Instead of throwing good money after bad, maybe the District should finally look to the future and build a third high school.

This may be a blessing in disguise if it persuades the board to re-examine the mistaken policy of trying to make Central too big, instead of adding a couple of smaller schools with targeted missions to the mix -- or even a third high school. Personally I'd prefer to see more, smaller high schools with different niches and missions.

Why not build a desperately needed middle school at Valley View. Put all the 9th graders at Dakota, and the over-crowding problem is solved everywhere. Of course you still won't have your new Fine Arts and Sports Wings at CHS, but you sure have some excellent options at Dakota. Oh I forgot, they are giving that to the Community Theater.

from a staff member:

Thanks for your comments, they match mine. Our teachers, mostly, work so diligently, seem to be well trained and yet I believe until we can get parents more involved on a regular basis with their students in their school efforts, we will continue to face this disappointment.

On a good note, we graduated 30 students from summer school on Tuesday. What a great thing!! They were happy as well. And we had conversations with parents about getting the students to daily classes especially if they received scholarships. Tough love all around perhaps?

I do think we will have to compare the standards, our curriulum and D-STEP closely to make sure we are aligned from teaching to testing. Thanks for your involvement

Three cheers for the board members who think we should take a look at a third high school, especially now that we are in this price range.

I urge them to think not only in terms of a third building but also in terms of a third approach that creates a "niche" high school excelling in a narrower mission rather than another "one size fits all" all-American we-got-everything cookie cutter.

Maybe it is aimed at college prep for kids who have the smarts to do college but not the background or family support and tradition to make it happen. Maybe it is aimed at taking the best and brightest and launching them to excel at a new and higher, nationally competitive level, like taking kids who if left to the status quo system would get into, say, the University of Minnesota and instead let's get them into Princeton. Maybe it's an arts and science school that doesn't need a football team. (A science high school downwind from the Homestake lab and next to Tech -- there's an idea~!!) Lots of possibilities out there to consider!

If we expand Central to hold 2,000 kids it will soon have 2,500. Time for a different approach, and time to offer kids and their parents some meaningful choices.

Moreover, there is a bigger question on the boundaries issue. I've heard from many kids and parents that they prefer their kids at Central because there is more diversity, regardless of crowding.

The question might be--why aren't more kids and parents choosing Stevens for their kids if it is an option and there is less crowding? Has anyone asked that question in any kind of community assessment?

Fron everything I've seen, building a new school would be an option, but staffing it would not given budget restrictions.

As parent of a Central kid, I know they need more space. Part of the issue (especially for arts kids and teachers) is lack of appropriate space. It won't solve all the problems but is better than doing nothing in my view.

Future plans probably do need to plan for a new school---just doesn't seem in the cards in the short term. Would like to hear other views if they are out there.

I wonder whether the board would consider using the search process as a means of holding a broader discussion about what direction we (taxpayers, parents, stakeholders, the community) want to see the Rapid City schools take.

It's kind of like congregations searching for a new pastor. Sometimes they want one who can get a new building up. Sometimes they want one who can heal a rift in the flock. Sometimes they want a fund-raiser.

So, before we cast about for resumes and a screening process, how about stepping back and having a discussion about where this thing is going, or ought to be going next, and then let that establish some criteria for a new superintendent wish list.

Our Rapid City Schools asked the District about this issue of the floodway. The civil engineer working with the design team reports: "Our preliminary plans do not show any construction in the Floodway. All of the construction outside of the floodway will be elevated above base flood elevations."
